SCOUT TROOP

AFTER CAMP

The best time to sort out camping and hiking kit is as soon as possible after the last trip: try to put stuff away ready for the next camp.

What came back? First step is to check for damage. Also, if anything is not yours - or missing something - get in touch with the Scout Leader and bring extra items in to the next meeting.

Do better next time? Consider what was used or not used. Were there things that would have been useful, but not taken? Could the kit have been packed better - see the notes that accompany each kit list. The best time to think about this is after a camp - not just before the next.

Sleeping bag. Give it a good airing, if at all possible - out of its stuff bag. Then store it loosely: an old pillow case is ideal for this. The filling can partly expand ("keep its loft") and the fabric can breathe, without taking up lots of room. The pillow case also keeps it clean and dust free.

Boots. Remove loose mud and dirt. Wipe with a damp cloth. Occasionally reproof. Also check laces. Were the boots really big enough on last use?

Water bottle. Rinse out and allow to dry: if water stays inside, bugs may grow, so do not store wet.
