We are called the Aquila Scout Troop, as this combines elements from a Troop
tradition and from the great Roman past of our home city, St Albans.
Our Troop's Patrols continue to be named after birds of prey (Raptors):
currently these are Eagles, Falcons, Hawks, Kestrels, Merlins. Patrol symbols
are shown on the right.
St Albans was
built by and from the remains of Verulamium, an important Roman City north of
Londinium.
Aquila is Latin for eagle or, sometimes, other large bird of prey:
until recently, people were not too precise about identifying particular species. This has
given several uses of the word:
Aquila chrysaetos is the
scientific name for the Golden Eagle.
Aquila is the symbol on the standards of
Roman legions, and also the standard itself, carried in front of the legion. There is a picture on the left.
..... and Aquila is also a
constellation, whose brightest star is Altair (from the Arabic for eagle).
